A thug who hit his ex-wife on the head with a claw-hammer and left her lying in a pool of her own blood for five hours has been jailed.

Mebub Islam, 27, was sentenced to a minimum of 16 years and 145 days on October 15 after being found guilty at a previous trial of attempted murder and false imprisonment.

The defendant forced his victim to repeat a death prayer as he beat her in the cocaine and ecstasy-fuelled attack, Judge Simon Phillips QC heard at Sheffield Crown Court.

Islam also got a friend to pick up their young child before threatening to stab his ex with a flick knife if she screamed for help.

Judge Phillips told Islam: “Not only did you intend to kill her at the time of the attack but for several months you had been planning to kill her.

“You were angry that she had admitted cutting up your clothes at your treatment of her several months before.”

Islam’s ex-girlfriend had reported alleged violent behaviour to cops before, the court heard – but she had taken her complaints back because she was scared it would worsen the situation.

Islam had been in trouble with police in the past

A lawyer mitigating for Islam, Mark McKone, argued his client had relatively few convictions and said references painted him in a good light.

But Judge Phillips pointed out aggravating features including Islam ordering more drugs after the grim attack, washing the hammer afterwards and saying to his victim he would kill her if she exposed what happened.

Islam, who lives on Egerton Close, Broomhall, has 10 previous convictions for 15 offences.

This includes breaking a restraining order on a suspended prison sentence given in April 2020, for two charges of battery.
